Our Mission
Method Dance Society is a not-for-profit dance company based on the unceded Indigenous Territory of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation (Prince George, BC). We are dedicated to expanding the presence, practice, and accessibility of contemporary dance in Northern BC by fostering artistic growth, public engagement, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Our mission is to support regional dance artists—particularly those from equity-seeking communities—by providing mentorship, professional development, and performance opportunities that reflect the diverse movement practices and cultural expressions shaping contemporary dance today. Through innovative programming, we cultivate dialogue around Northern identity, relationality, and place-based artistic practice, challenging dominant narratives in the dance field.
By integrating community engagement, education, and artistic exploration, we create dynamic and inclusive spaces where artists and audiences alike can connect, learn, and experience the transformative power of movement. Method Dance Society is committed to decentralizing contemporary dance, ensuring that Northern artists are not only participants in the national dance landscape but active contributors to its evolution
Our Vision
Method Dance Society is building a sustainable and equitable future for contemporary dance in Northern BC by dismantling barriers to access, fostering artistic innovation, and amplifying underrepresented voices. We envision a dance ecosystem where regional artists—particularly those from equity-seeking communities—can develop, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to Canada’s broader artistic landscape without leaving the North. By investing in mentorship, professional development, and cross-cultural collaboration, we are cultivating a dance practice that is both locally rooted and nationally relevant. Through innovative programming, community engagement, and strategic capacity-building, Method Dance Society is redefining what it means to create, present, and sustain contemporary dance beyond traditional urban centers.
Our Values
Equity & Decolonization
We are committed to equitable access to dance by supporting artists from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, including Indigenous, Métis, BIPOC, gender-diverse, and disability-identified artists. Our work actively challenges Western-Eurocentric norms in dance by embracing multiple cultural perspectives and honoring Indigenous knowledge and relational ways of being.
Community & Collaboration
Dance is a shared experience. We cultivate meaningful relationships between artists, audiences, and communities by fostering public engagement, interdisciplinary exchange, and participatory programming. Our outreach initiatives and partnerships ensure dance remains an inclusive and evolving art form.
Sustainability & Capacity-Building
We are dedicated to supporting Northern artists in developing long-term, viable careers through mentorship, training, and professional opportunities. By strengthening regional dance infrastructure, we work towards a self-sustaining dance ecosystem in Northern BC, ensuring artists don’t have to leave the region to grow.
Artistic Innovation & Accessibility
We broaden the definition of contemporary dance by uplifting diverse movement practices, embracing interdisciplinary exploration, and encouraging artistic risk-taking. Our programs and performances make contemporary dance accessible, relevant, and reflective of the unique cultural landscapes of Northern BC.
Regional Representation & Advocacy
Northern artists deserve recognition as active contributors to the national and international dance landscape. We challenge urban-centric biases in the arts by advocating for the visibility of Northern BC dance artists and ensuring that their work is valued on both regional and national stages.
Equity Statement
Method Dance Society (MDS) is committed to fostering an equitable, inclusive, and accessible environment where dancers, choreographers, and community members can create, engage, and thrive without fear of discrimination or harassment. Our work is guided by a commitment to anti-racism, decolonization, and systemic change, ensuring that all artists—particularly those from equity-deserving communities—are valued, supported, and provided with meaningful opportunities to participate in the arts.
We recognize that diversity alone is not enough; we actively work towards removing barriers to access, amplifying underrepresented voices, and disrupting Eurocentric narratives in dance. Our programming, mentorship initiatives, and artistic collaborations are intentionally designed to center Indigenous, Métis, BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, gender-diverse, and disability-identified artists while respecting and learning from multiple artistic and cultural lineages.
Our Board of Directors and membership reflect our commitment to diversity and inclusion, and we strive to uphold equity in artistic programming, auditions, and leadership opportunities. When auditioning dancers, we prioritize inclusive assessment practices and seek to engage panels that represent a breadth of lived experiences. Beyond performance, we provide multiple entry points for engagement, including choreography, mentorship, workshops, and community-led initiatives, ensuring that all communities in Northern BC have access to contemporary dance in a meaningful way.
MDS is committed to decentralizing dance from urban centers and ensuring that artists in Northern BC have the resources, support, and networks to thrive. We believe that dance is a powerful tool for dialogue, cultural exchange, and systemic transformation, and we will continue working toward a future where contemporary dance reflects the full breadth of identities, stories, and movement traditions that shape our communities.
